Artists’ Meditation Workshop

We are excited to announce a special program for artists only!  SouthWind Gallery has partnered with Laura Mead, a highly respected meditation and bioenergy teacher, to present a series of meditation classes.

We hope you’ll join us for this 8-week session to learn techniques that can help you relax, focus, and enhance your creativity.  We think the meditation classes will not only be helpful, we also plan to make the gathering fun and interesting for everyone!

The weekly classes will meet at SouthWind Gallery on Wednesdays, beginning January 4, 2012, through February 22, 2012, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.  The classes are open to artists only (professional and non-professional), and are specifically designed to explore ways in which you can improve and compliment your creative abilities. You may enroll for the entire 8-week series or attend individual classes.  We’ve made the class fees very affordable because we believe everyone can benefit from the skills learned in meditation practice. Information about class fees is listed on the attached enrollment form. Class size is limited so we encourage you to enroll early if you plan to attend.

We hope you’ll take a minute to look at the enrollment form and that you’ll join us for an enjoyable learning experience.  Please call if you have questions: 785.273.5994.

What is Meditation?

“Meditation is an instrument or technique to shape or transform the mind.” The Dali Lama

If the thought of meditation brings to mind the image of monks in long flowing robes chanting in some isolated, far Eastern monastery, it is important to know that is only one aspect of meditation. Meditation is fast becoming a regular part of the recommended health plan for our society. Today, you are just as likely to see executives meditating in a board room or doctors and patients meditating together in a hospital wellness program. You also are likely to see monks meditating in neuroscience labs of world class universities.

There are many types of meditation, and with each there are very specific aspects and instructions. Overall, meditation practice is a technique by which one begins the process of choosing the direction or function of one’s mind and emotions. It also is defined as a process of gradually “cultivating” or developing qualities of the mind and emotions. Taking the time to carefully consider what it is you would like to gain from meditation is a useful tool to be used at the beginning of each meditation session.

As with any practice, whether it’s learning to play a musical instrument or learning how to meditate, it’s important to seek a qualified teacher who can be helpful in offering guidance, tips and instructions on particular practices. Furthermore, in addition to practicing one’s own daily meditation, it is very helpful to have a group of friends with whom you can practice meditation.

It is not necessary to follow one type of spiritual path or religious sect to practice meditation. Meditation appears in all cultures in one form or another and it is possible to receive clear and comprehensive instructions of various practices without having to subscribe to the cultural beliefs from which the practice originated.
